Tomar rest day

The town of Tomar is by fag my favorite in Portugal so far. It combines history, culture and sophistication into a compact, intimate setting. It's known for its 12th century castle and convent set high on a hill overlooking the town. The castle was built by the Knights Templar whose purpose was to protect this region from the Moors.  We spent the afternoon here and both agreed that Tomar is worthy of its notoriety and glad we took a rest day here.

Our little street with castle on hilltop.

Convent with magnificent cloisters, naves and chapels.

Another church square with its cafes and restaurants. Lots of great fish dishes in Portigal. The local black pork is very tender and flavorful. And of course the  pastrix de maya continues to be a daily favorite at coffee break  time.

I should mention, too, that we've been very happy with our accommodations  in Porrugal. Most are set up like hostels, with private rooms complete with sheets and towels at about 15Eu per person.   We made the decision to ship our sleeping bags and other items no longer needed back to Colchester. This amounted to 6 lbs between us. Every little bit of weight loss helps.
